The gift basket dates back to 11th century Europe to William the Conqueror. William was of noble French descent, who became the king of England .  William was crowned king of England, in London, on Christmas Day, 1066. William introduced the English to the concept of the French hamper. Derived from the French term “hanapier”, these woven baskets, primarily hand made of hand tied willow, were initially tools for transporting food and drink during hunting expeditions and prolonged journeys. Wealthy travelers in France would bring baskets with them on journeys, and the  poor would receive them as charity.

Under William’s influence, gift hampers or baskets became popular during the Victorian era in England. They were often filled with tea, coffee, biscuits, and other treats for family and friends. However the Victorian era didn’t just use hampers or baskets as a symbol of wealth. They also used a handmade wooden crate or a box. Many employers would present their staff and servants with hampers. The servants in wealthy homes celebrated Christmas with their employers because they were expected to serve the family by which they were employed on Christmas day. The family  presented each staff member with a plentiful hamper. However these baskets contained more than just necessities. They were a thank you gift, a special sign of Christmas cheer, making sure everyone, no matter who they were, felt the season’s happiness. The staff would box up many goodies the day after Christmas that they had received from their employers, and take them home to their families. In Britain, this day became known as “Boxing Day” celebrated on December 26th. This traditional holiday continues to be honored in Britain today.
